Nomsa’s love of fashion started as a child. Her dream of being a fashion designer started early. Inspired by her father, a tailor, she taught herself how to sew clothing for her dolls.
In 2012 that dream ended early. Due to financial circumstances, Nomsa was forced to start working at 16 to support herself and her family. She started waitressing and soon a year turned to 8, and she got stuck in the industry due to necessity.
In 2020 she sadly lost her only source of income as a waitress due to the covid-19 lockdown.
Feeling hopeless, with a small child to support, she started sewing masks, selling them outside of Pick ’n Pay. Backed with the knowledge she had learnt from her father, she turned to YouTube for extra assistance and soon mastered the art of cutting and designing her masks.
This lead to Nomsa starting the Malgas Collection. A range of handmade garments made using eco-friendly fabrics. The journey was definitely no walk in the park, but her lifelong dream had finally come to fruition. Making contemporary womenswear from sustainable
WHY WE CHOSE NOMSA:
A resourceful young woman who supports sustainable fashion is someone we can certainly get behind. She’s come so far on her own, that we know a helping hand will be used wisely to take her sustainable fashion business to the next level.
WHAT THE #EmpowHER DONATION WILL BE USED FOR:
Currently Nomsa is the sole maker of her garments. She owns 2 domestic sewing machines, but struggles to keep up with the demand for the Malgas Collection. The money will go towards an industrial sewing machine, which will go a long way in improving her capacity, as well as the quality of her stitching.
